Definition and Purpose
Fretting corrosion is a deterioration process that occurs at the interface of two contacting surfaces undergoing slight, repetitive motion. It is characterized by the formation and disintegration of oxide layers, leading to material loss and damage. This type of corrosion is commonly observed in machinery where components are subject to vibratory forces, resulting in the loosening of fits and the potential for significant equipment failure.
