Definition and Purpose
Extreme Pressure (EP) properties refer to the ability of a lubricant to withstand high load conditions and prevent metal-to-metal contact, which can lead to scuffing, scoring, and seizure. This characteristic is critical in applications where components are subject to heavy loads and potential boundary lubrication conditions. EP additives chemically react with metal surfaces under extreme conditions, forming a protective film that enhances load-carrying capacity.
