Extreme Pressure (EP) Additive

Glossary Term

Definition and Purpose

Extreme Pressure (EP) additives are substances incorporated into lubricants to prevent metal-to-metal contact under high stress and sliding conditions. They activate at elevated temperatures and high loads, chemically reacting with metal surfaces to form a protective film. This film significantly enhances the lubricant's load-carrying capacity, safeguarding machinery components from wear such as scuffing and scoring.
