Apparent Viscosity

Glossary Term

Definition and Purpose

Apparent viscosity is a measure of a fluid's resistance to flow under applied shear stress, which is not constant but varies with shear rate and temperature. This non-Newtonian behavior is particularly relevant for materials like lubricating grease, where it helps predict the performance in a system. The apparent viscosity is determined using standardized tests such as ASTM D1092.
